Folly looks like a wise move
Posted On 07/29/2010 03:19:57 by pigshow

ANY Englishman's home is his castle. And, for anyone with Pounds 1.65m they can be the king of their own domain at this Grade II listed building known as Cooks Folly.

Appropriately, the Sneyd Park property, which dates back to 1672, is set in a commanding position overlooking the Avon Gorge.

It includes a magnificent tower built by Maurice Cooke, with the adjacent house constructed and occupied by the family over a century and a half ago.

At present, the interior is arranged as a maisonette and two apartments, but it could easily be reinstated as a single house. Castellated in design with turrets and windows of immense character, there are outstanding views from the principal rooms.

Recent refurbishments and modifications have not compromised the integrity of the property, which is centred on a magnificent octagonal hall, with an inner reception area, wood panelled, ornate architraves and ceiling detail.

The drawing room overlooks the garden and woodland beyond and features cornice with fruiting vine motives and a magnificent fireplace as the focal point.

The adjacent dining room has a teak ceiling and a more contemporary fireplace, while perhaps watches-y the most unique part of the house is the turret room. The lower ground floor, which formally housed a swimming pool complex, has been adapted and now features a games room, study, bathroom and three bedrooms, plus a dressing room and an independent shower room.

The first and top floors incorporate two self-contained flats. With the removal of stud walls, the first floor would revert to four bedrooms and a bathroom, and similarly the top floor could revert to two suites, but currently incorporates an occasional sitting room, kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom.

Cooks Folly has a magnificent approach with a gravelled drive and turning circle leading to the large garage. Beyond is a courtyard and the former pool complex. Gardens to the rear span the width of the house with a stone balustrade and 深圳龙岗搬家公司 steps down to the level lawn. Further steps lead down to the woodland below.

The adjacent woodland is part-owned by Cooks Folly House and maintained by English Heritage. For more details, contact Savills in Clifton via email to or call 0117 933 5800.
